What’s your top story for today?
All building companies want to discuss is their sustainable building designs and construction methods. This trend doesn’t look like ending anytime soon.
Tell us about your dream assignment.
I would love to cover the Chicago Cubs in a World Series. They’d have to make it to one first, of course, and I’d have to get back into sports writing. But you never know. I also would like to cover the Summer Olympics one day.
Describe the wackiest story you’ve written.
As the public safety reporter in college, I wrote countless news briefs about drunken shenanigans. The funniest one had to be about a guy getting a ticket for heaving a keg off a balcony because his friends dared him to do it.
As a stringer for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, I was given assignments the veteran reporters didn’t have the time (or interest) to take on, so I wrote about some truly obscure sports. I found writing about the ancient Irish sport of hurling fascinating because it was brand new to me. The same goes for the Lumberjack World Championships and the International Cycling Classic.
What is your PR pet peeve?
It’s quite inconvenient when PR people cannot deliver what they promise. I’d rather have someone turn down a request for content submissions as soon as I share my deadline, as opposed to scrambling to fill pages in my magazine at the 11th hour.
Top trend in the industry you’re currently covering or are interested in.
Green building and sustainable design are always hot topics for our construction books.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I was born and raised in Chicago and moved to Milwaukee to pursue my bachelor’s in journalism from Marquette University. I returned to Chicago from 2004 until 2015 before relocating back to Milwaukee this summer. When I’m not churning out trade publications, I’m playing softball, strumming guitar, chasing my 17-month son around or collecting sports memorabilia.

  1. Thanks for the great blog Brian. It must have been fun finding out about those obscure sports – and fingers crossed you get to cover the World Series or Olympics one day!

  2. Brian – thanks for contributing. I’m another native Chicagoan and always glad to meet another Cubs fan. But I do have to say I like the weather better in San Francisco. Appreciate your blog! Cheers, David

  3. Brian – thanks for your post. Perhaps one day you’ll be able to cover sustainable design for the Olympics. I know there’s a lot of thought and design that goes into the construction of world-class arenas for athletes.

  4. Brian, I really enjoyed the blog – thank you! How great to hear that you started your career writing for your college paper – clearly it’s your passion to write. Also, it’s always nice to get to know the person behind the byline. Now I can picture you chasing around your 17-month-old son!

  5. Brian – Thank you for the blog post. Isn’t hurling a crazy sport? My college roommate’s brother played it when he was growing up in Ireland – I couldn’t believe that they were swinging wooden clubs that close to one another!
