Meet the Media – Mary MacVean, Mind & Body Editor at the Los Angeles Times

Meet Mary MacVean, Mind & Body Editor for the Los Angeles Times
la-bio-mary-macveanWhat’s your top story for today?
My section is weekly, but a recent top story was about gym bros, those young men who are obsessed with the gym and building a perfect body.
Tell us about your dream assignment.
I would like to write about food in culture, politics and life. Not recipes or restaurants, but about the enormous role food plays in our lives.
Describe the wackiest story you’ve written.
Not too much wacky has been in my career, but perhaps the live-person juke box in Pittsburgh.
What is your PR pet peeve?
Sending the same email over and over.
Top trend in the industry you’re currently covering or are interested in.
The search for the perfect diet.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a New Yorker by birth and temperament and moved to LA with my husband and two boys 15 years ago. I have been interested in food for decades. I was the national editor at the Associated Press, and left that job to be the AP’s food and nutrition writer. I cook, no surprise. I have two college student sons, who also cook, maybe also no surprise. I’d love to live abroad again, and I am happy to travel pretty much anytime and anywhere.

  1. Mary, great blog. As one foodie to another, what’s your favorite restaurant in LA, SF and NY? Mine are:
either SPQR or Campton Place (SF), Mastro’s in Beverly Hills and anything by Daniel Boulud in NY. Thanks for contributing this week. Cheers, David

  2. Hi Mary,
Thanks for contributing to our blog! I am also interested in the significant role that food plays in our lives. Throughout your travels, have you found that people in various regions have different relationships towards food?
    Thanks,
    Elena

  3. I love your story from a few days ago on going to morning dance parties instead of hitting the gym– I MUST look for those happening in SF! Thanks for posting Mary.

  4. very interesting topic…especially the search for the perfect diet since it’s so individual…thanks for contributing!

  5. Hi Mary, I can tell simply based on this blog post that you’d make for a great person to share a glass (bottle?) of wine with! Thanks for your participation on Backtalk and I look forward to following you on Twitter.
