Meet Taryn Huhn, Editor of San Diego Entertainer.
What’s your top story for today?
It’s a close tie between Will Smith’s daughter Willow’s new hit song, “I Whip My Hair Back and Forth” and the shooting at the Pentagon. (It’s always interesting how things break down like that…it tells a lot about our culture, I think).
Tell us about your dream assignment.
I really enjoy celebrity interviews, especially relating to country music, which I love. If I could combine that with another passion — food–that would be ideal. Maybe interviewing a Food Network chef like Ina Garten or Giada De Laurentiis or Paula Dean. Preferably I’d also be allowed to cook with them. It is a dream assignment after all, right?
Describe the wackiest interview you’ve ever done.
I don’t know if it qualifies as wacky, but the most fun article I wrote was Cuckoo for Cupcakes, about Cups in La Jolla opening. I stumbled upon the opening through a friend and we went. We both fell in love with their cupcakes and I just had to write a story. I felt like I was more creative in that piece that ever before. I had to tap into my culinary side while being interesting and fun to match the atmosphere of the bakery. They loved the article so much it ended up on their press wall in the restaurant. Granted, the press wall is in the bathroom, but still! It made me feel good to have my work appreciated.
What is your PR pet peeve?
I often get the same information over and over again. There have even been times that I’ve responded indicating my interest, and I still get the introductory information. It makes me feel like I’m just one of a million members of the media who they’re contacting and they don’t really care if I do the story or not.
Top trend in the industry you’re currently covering or are interested in?
Hot news and buzz stories are our top focus. Typically these relate to celebrity news, big events and local news. We love to focus on local stories wherever possible.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I graduated from UCSD not looking to get into writing or editing. I was, and am, still interested in marketing. I really enjoy tying my editorial skills with my marketing interests to promote the best stories I can.
Be sure to check back next time for another installation of “Meet the Media!”
Taryn: Thanks for joining us at LCI’s “Backtalk.” I’m a cupcake fan myself – try Kara’s Kupcakes
