LCI Blog: Meet the Media – Wendy Wofford-Garcia, blogger, The Weekend Gourmet

New PictureThis week, we had the pleasure to speak with Wendy Wofford-Garcia, blogger, The Weekend Gourmet
What’s your top story for today?
My top story for today is the planning of our upcoming blog trip to New York in late April! Last fall, I combined our love of food and travel and began a series of food/wine travelogues. The series is called A Food Lover’s Weekend In… and features the best in food/wine attractions and entertainment in U.S. cities. So far, we’ve featured New Orleans, Las Vegas and Austin. The goal is to do 3-4 of these trips per year. The top cities and regions on my wish list are Boston, Napa Valley and Washington, D.C.
Tell us about your dream assignment.
My dream story would be to travel to Napa Valley to profile Thomas Keller’s French Laundry for The Weekend Gourmet Dines Out. I would interview Chef Keller and enjoy an amazing dinner with wine pairings. Then, I’d share the experience with my readers. If it’s really a “dream assignment,” I’d invite Sting, Bradley Cooper, and Hillary Clinton to join us for dinner!
Describe the wackiest story you’ve written.
I don’t really write wacky stories, but I think the most interesting story I’ve written was about a barbeque road trip to Lockhart, Texas, last year. We visited two of the most popular barbeque joints in the city, which is the official barbeque capital of Texas. It’s one of my most popular stories, and I’ve received some really funny emails from readers because of it. Barbeque is extremely popular in Texas, and people are VERY loyal to their favorites!
What is your PR pet peeve?
I dislike obvious exaggeration when trying to promote a product or person. Make the pitch, but don’t be over the top.
Top trend in the industry you’re currently covering or are interested in.
I really love the current interest in collaboration between like-minded bloggers. Rather than competition, there’s strength and support in numbers! For example, I joined a great group called #SundaySupper last summer. We share recipes along a different theme each week. The group has allowed me to do several things: network and learn more about blogging, stretch my comfort zone, add to my cooking repertoire, and reach a larger audience. The bonus is that I’ve made some really fabulous friends!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a native Texan who grew up in the Houston area and now lives in San Antonio. My Chief Taste Tester is my husband, Michael. He’s also my dining out and travel photographer. We have two cats, Lucy and Maggie. I believe that a sense of humor is vital to living, so I love to laugh and have fun! My favorite things to do are: cook and dine out, travel, listen to music, watch sports, and go to the movies. When I can combine any of these, I’m a very happy woman!

  1. Hi Wendy –
I’m a native Texan too (now living in CA) and will be sure to check out your posts on Texas barbecue and other favs. I MUST get a BBQ and a Tex-Mex fix every time I visit my family there. They don’t have BBQ here like they do there! If you come to Napa, do let us know as we can probably hook you up with some restaurants.

    1. That would be great…I’m hoping to do Napa in Fall. Most likely just before/after crush…since that’s when crowds are smaller. I’ve eaten at ad hoc on a prior trip and just loved it! Have several others on my wish list for our next visit, along with some fab wineries! Drop me an e-mail so I have you in my contacts when we start putting that trip together, please!

  2. Wendy, thanks for the great contribution. I agree, I hate exaggeration. Stick to the facts, please – that’s my motto and it’s gotten us far in PR. Keep up the good work! Cheers, David

    1. Thanks for the kind words…I almost went into PR after I graduated with my journalism degree back in the day. Then, I was offered a job as a technical editor for a NASA contractor and did that for 10 years before getting a wild hair and going to law school. My first love is writing, so my website is my creative outlet!

  3. Hi Wendy! Thanks again for participating in our Meet the Media blog! I’m actually from Napa so I have some great recommendations for when you visit as well 🙂 Keep me posted!
    Cheers, Hilary
