5 Things You Need To Succeed in Public Relations

Kelly Taylor, Senior Account Executive here at LCI, with some thoughts about how to succeed in public relations.

Some are born to relish in the public relations spotlight.  Some just aren’t cut out for it.  Then there are those who just happen to fall into public relations, but are lucky enough to be taught the necessary fundamental skills that will carry them to the upper level rather quickly.  Over the years, I have recognized a few “nouns” that are necessary traits to have to continue moving onward and upward in the world of public relations…

  1. Tenacity:  If you want something, make it happen!  If you want your client’s product on the TODAY show, then do whatever it takes to get it on there!  It may take 50 different pitch angles, or even 10 lunch dates with every member of the production team.  That approach may take up precious time, but in the long run, will be worth every minute when you know their team in and out.  Keep at it….it’ll all fall into place eventually!
  2. Sense of Humor:  Being able to laugh no matter what life throws you is a skill many miss.  Thinking through the negativity and being able to see the positive outcome that all your hard work will eventually bring to the surface takes time to master.  There will always be long nights and impossible client expectations to meet.  After all is said and done, you will have gained that much more knowledge and you’ll succeed with less hurdles the second time around.
  3. Integrity:  Do the right thing!  Not many successful careers are built on lies.  Treat your clients and coworkers as you would like to be treated and always take what you feel is the best course of action.
  4. Trust:  Trust in yourself — and your colleagues — is one of the most important fundamental attributes you can perfect.  You have been given the skills to do your job successfully (otherwise, you wouldn’t be where you are), so trust that that’s exactly what you’ll do.  Your colleagues are in the same boat, so trust that they are there to help and support you 100%.
  5. Flexibility:  Personally, this is still a challenge.  Multitasking is not a skill that’s easy to master.  How do you manage multiple clients, multiple projects, and multiple people with which you work?  How do you control the tenacity, integrity and trust on each, while still staying positive?  Get out the ol’ check list…priorities go at the top so you know which clients’ needs require your attention first.  Think freely as you are moving from one to the other.  You never know when an idea can be used multiple times.

Of course, success is defined differently by everyone.  For me, the above are traits that I have found to be obvious in the leaders that I have strived to emulate.  You may have some traits of your own that you like to practice.  I say, if it works for you, do it!
