Meet the Media – Mark Carman, WGN Radio & FanSided.com

What’s your top story for today?
The top story we are covering today is fallout from the NFL draft while also focusing on the NBA playoffs.

Tell us about your dream assignment.
My dream assignment is getting to interview the biggest names in sports from LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Bryce Harper, Tom Brady etc. I am also hoping to do some in-depth video pieces on some of the greatest teams of all-time.

Describe the wackiest story you’ve written.
I don’t write a ton of “wacky” stories, but more focus on the video aspect of the job. Most recently, the chimpanzee grandma attack at the John Ball Zoo got our attention.

What is your PR pet peeve?
My biggest PR pet peeve is micro managing an interview where you can talk to a client, but cannot ask certain questions. Most times the interview is not worth doing without those questions.

Top trend in the industry you’re currently covering or are interested in.
I cover all sports so not sure on a top trend. Everyone is hyped for video these days. We cannot create enough.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I am both a radio talk show host at WGN radio as well as a video host at FanSided.com. I like being on “both sides” of the business as the platforms continue to evolve. I always dreamt of being a play-by-play broadcaster and still hold out hope I can incorporate some of that into my work schedule.

  1. Hi Mark – thanks for your recent coverage of Darryl Strawberry on FanSided.com. Is there a sport you find the most interesting to cover? Where do you think sports coverage is headed in the next five years? Recent news is saying ESPN is struggling to hang onto viewers.

  2. Mark, thanks so much for contributing to our blog. I’d love to see you do a “husband and wife” interview with Steph and Aleesha Curry! Cheers, David

  3. Being paid to watch and commentate on a sport you love would be great fun – best of luck in pursuing that dream!
